Every vendor calls its AI an assistant, an agent, a copilot. None of those words carry a bar. You cannot tell whether the AI in front of you remembers you, holds a stable identity, grounds its answers in anything real, or lets you erase what it knows. There has never been a standard for that.
So we wrote one. The M.I.N.D. Standard defines — in plain, testable terms — the four capabilities an AI must provide to be called a mind instead of a tool.
We have been measuring the wrong thing. The industry celebrates ever-more-powerful answering and calls it intelligence. But a genius who forgets everything each morning is not a genius — he is an oracle. The whole field is building faster oracles and calling them minds.
Continuity is not a feature of intelligence — it is the condition of a mind. Answering is not thinking. A mind continues.
The M.I.N.D. Standard draws the line. Below it: the AI-as-tool — amnesic, interchangeable, disposable. You consult it. It dies each tab. Above it: the AI-as-mind — persistent, situated, it remembers, it has a voice, it hands you the keys. You don't consult it. You work with it.
Each capability is a single yes/no test. A system either provides it or it does not. Modeled on POSIX: the standard specifies what the system MUST provide, and the claim is checkable, not believed.
The system MUST retain, across sessions, facts it learns about a user, and that knowledge MUST accumulate and update over time — not merely replay the current session.
The system MUST present a stable identity that persists across sessions and is not silently swapped between interactions.
The system MUST ground its answers in a real, inspectable body of knowledge or context rather than fabricating. When it does not know, it SHOULD say so.
The system MUST let the user inspect everything it has retained about them, and MUST let them correct or erase it — per relationship and in full. Erasure MUST be real.
The silent kN in kNowledge is the standard's signature letter — as the X is POSIX's. And authored output (work that carries the system's signature) is a direct consequence of Identity, not a fifth letter: a stable identity that produces work necessarily produces authored work.
Compliance is a scale, not a switch — the way POSIX.1 and POSIX.2 are layered. Each level adds one capability. A system must satisfy every capability of a level to claim it. Partial credit is not compliance.
| Level | Capabilities | What it is | |
|---|---|---|---|
| L0 | — | Disposable prompt | A naked chatbot. Amnesic. Dies every tab. |
| L1 | I | Persona | A voice — but it forgets everything. |
| L2 | I + N | Assistant | Voice + grounding. ~90% of the market stops here. |
| L3 | I + N + M | Continuous Agent | It finds you again. The relationship begins. |
| L4 | I + N + M + D | mind | Persists, grounds, remembers, AND hands you the keys. |
Why Disclosure is the final gate: an AI that remembers you without letting you see or erase that memory is not a mind you can trust — it is surveillance. The keys must be yours.
A mind is an AI that keeps an identity, stays grounded in truth, remembers you over time, produces work in its own voice, and lets you hold the keys to its memory. Anything less is an assistant.
Corpify's editorial minds meet all four capabilities. We made ourselves fully compliant before publishing the standard — comply first, claim second.
| M | Memory — distilled, cumulative memory kept per mind, per person. |
| I | Identity — a durable voice and point of view for each named mind. |
| N | kNowledge — answers grounded in each mind's own published work and your business context. |
| D | Disclosure — a page where you see, edit, and erase everything a mind remembers about you. |
The M.I.N.D. Standard measures capabilities, which are observable. It makes no claim of consciousness, sentience, or feeling — "mind" is a label earned by passing four tests, never a claim of a soul. The standard is open: any AI may be evaluated against it, and anyone may cite it — like POSIX, it belongs to no single vendor. A system must not advertise a level it has not actually met. The standard is only worth something if the claim is checkable and the claimant is honest.
You can talk to a Level 4 mind right now — and see exactly what it remembers.
